As our exchange continued, we explored the composition of search and rescue teams. Manikian’s thoughts on that sort of women’s presence in the backcountry are pointed and incisive. During this time, Outside magazine’s online site had published a piece on Mount Washington’s deadly nature, and it featured Kate Matrosova. Manikian wrote back to me expressing her frustration that, despite any number of men dying there too, Matrosova is being “forever punished. ‘Mount Washington Kills Women Who Dare Try to Climb It,’ is the continuing message.” Then she made a powerful link between that ongoing attention and search and rescue:
